CAN I AVOID GETTING PLANNING PERMISSION?
If you were to opt for a Juliet style balcony, then you will not require planning permission as this isn’t regarded as a raised platform.
A Juliet balcony is also known as a false balcony because there is no flooring involved in the design. Instead, a railing is placed on the outside of a window opening that reaches the floor, so that when they are open, it gives the appearance of a balcony.
ALTHOUGH, THERE ARE SOME EXCEPTIONS:
If the Juliet balcony features any type of flooring, no matter how thin, then you will require planning permission.
If the property is listed or based within a conservation zone, it will almost certainly require planning permission.
If Juliet balconies are an uncommon feature in the local area, then you may need planning permission or be asked to move the balcony to the back of the property.

IN KEEPING WITH THE CURRENT DESIGN AND PERIOD OF THE PROPERTY
If the balcony is designed well, then it should sit comfortably with the rest of the property. Particularly in conservation zones, some planning officers will ask for the balcony to be installed at the rear, to avoid any disruption to the appearance.

Once your plans have been sent off and validated, a case officer will be assigned for assessment. In addition to this, local residents will also be contacted and will be given 21 days to comment on the proposal. For a small application, like a balcony, it shouldn’t take any longer than eight weeks to get a final decision.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY APPLICATION IS REJECTED?
While most applications are approved, there is a chance that some might get rejected. If you find yourself in this position, then you will receive detailed reasoning as to why they made the decision. After this, you can make the necessary amends and resubmit.
