Avoid These Common Balustrade Mistakes

  • By aaron yeo

Here at ANY Weld, we know that when it comes choosing balustrades, whether it be balconies, staircases, terraces or even swimming pools, that it can be the defining factor for many people’s renovation projects or new builds. Therefore, it is important to make sound calls on balustrades that you won’t regret later down the line.

Before you set your heart on a particular balustrade, take the time to consider these common mistakes that people can make before finalising on what balustrade they are going to have in their homes, so you don’t make the same ones!

Mismatching

One of the first things you want to do is think about the style of your home in terms of its architecture, prior to choosing your residential balustrade . A good example of this would be if you were to opt for stainless steel and glass balustrades to be fitted in a traditional stately home. It’s simply a matter of knowing what styles to pair with each other.

The good news is that our team are on hand to help you find the right choice for your requirements so that your next home improvement project is as good as it possibly can be.

Self-installation

As far as the installation of balustrades is concerned, any works should always be carried out by professionals who are trained to fit them. It’s best to contact a local contractor who can offer proof of a good reputation and can provide positive references and testimonials – something that ANY Weld pride ourselves on. The last thing you want to do is to buy balustrades with the intention of fitting them yourself and doing a sub-par job; not only is this going to disappoint in the long run, it also throws up health and safety risks. So, make sure you get the job done by a trained tradesperson.

Pricing

Selecting a balustrade purely through the price tag is a mistake people have made in the past and is just as dicey as choosing your balustrading based on looks alone. Sometimes, the cheapest option might seem like the best one, but from experience, it often is not. If you are going simply on price over other large factors such as safety, design, durability, and ease of installation, then it might be worth holding on and saving until you can afford the balustrades you really want. We’d advise putting together a handful of ideas that fit your criteria, which can then be looked over with us. Together, we can create a design while considering the costs associated with each and find the right one to fit all of your needs, along with your budget.

Aesthetics

We know that the aesthetics are an essential factor when it comes to choosing your balustrades, although you shouldn’t let the final decision boil entirely down to appearances alone. Think about the practical elements that your new balustrades can give you as well as looking fantastic. Safety is paramount and should always be high on the list, and again, this is something that you can consult with our team here at ANY Weld, as we can help you throughout the entire process.

Although we are specialists in the balustrade industry, we are not limited to it. We also offer a bespoke steel fabrication service that is highly-rated.

With this in mind, we thought we would offer you some insight in to just  what steel fabrication can bring to the table for you, including reasons to opt for this material, and its overall benefits.

Steel fabrication has the ability to fulfil a whole host of your building needs  which will be covered later on in the feature…

What are the best-known places to have steel fabrication structures?

We have included a few examples of places that can benefit well from structures made from steel fabrications, such as garages, storage units, warehouses, fire stations, manufacturing plants, recreation centres, sports arenas, for instance.

What are the advantages of having a steel fabrication structure?

There are plenty of advantages that come with opting to go down the route of steel fabrication-style frames, such as:

·    They are almost completely maintenance free.

·    Structural steel fabrications are highly corrosion and rust-resistant.

·    Painting structures of this kind is easily accomplished.

·    Structures of this kind, if built well, can be used for in excess of 30 years!

·    Customisable frames can be achieved to suit specific dimensions and sizes.

As opposed to wood frames, their steel counterparts are far more effective in the event of a fire. These steel frames prevent the spreading to adjacent places. This is obviously an important factor for many business owners.

Due to its versatility, adding various features such as electrical wiring, air con, or areas of ventilation once the building is going through to completion, is not an issue for concern.

What else can we say about steel structures?

By choosing a steel structure, you are guaranteeing the benefits mentioned above, combined with longevity.

When our expert team of professionals work on the design and installation of your steel structure, you are sure to not only have superior quality, but also supreme functional versatility, enriched architectural flexibility, to mention just a few of the appealing features that structures of this kind can give you.

When it comes to choosing a structure, it is always best to seek professional advice. We are able to offer this type of service; one that is tailored to your needs and individual requirements.

When it comes to having glass balustrades installed, safety glass should be used as standard, and you should not accept anything different.

We are going to look at some areas you should be aware of when it comes to glass regulations for balustrade installation:

Safety Glass

Laminated Glass: Laminated glass is made from a minimum of two glass panels with an interlayer. You will regularly see the interlayer made of plastic or resin-based materials. It’s possible for laminated glass to be made from two float panels, two toughened panels or a combination of those mentioned. This can be discussed with us here at ANY Weld before any decisions are made.

Toughened Glass: Tempered glass is formed from glass being subjected to heating at temperatures of around 700ºC, which is then quenched – a term for cooling the glass quickly.

Quenching is only conducted for around one minute but creates a strong layer on the front and back side, instantaneously locking tension inside the glass. This makes it up to four times stronger against impacts than regular float glass.

It is referred to as safety glass because, if shattered, it will not smash and break into big pieces, preventing those dangerous shards occurring. Instead, thousands of smalls pieces form if the impact is big enough, which is far less hazardous.

Safe Glass Balustrade Heights

Before any balustrades can be fitted, they are subject to a set of minimum height requirements, as follows:

·      Railings and balustrades for indoors, in a domestic property, can have a minimum height of 0.9m from the point that is stood on to the handrail.

·      Balconies being fitted outside a home are required to have a height of 1.1 m from fixing point to the top of the handrail.

Loading Pressure Guidelines

Glass balustrades not only add an aesthetic appeal, but they also prevent people from falling through, resisting both impacts and significant loads.

As far as pressure guidelines are concerned, three load requirements must be met, as follows:

1.  Vertical loading on the handrail

2.  Horizontal loading on the handrail

3.  Loading on the infill

Clearly, with a heavy load or pressure leaning against the various components, the balustrade will ‘give’ a little, but this ‘deflection’ must not exceed 25mm.

These are the basic requirements. If you would like to know more on the loading pressure regulations, our experts can offer this information as part of our high-quality service.

Why Has Glass Become So Popular for Balustrades?

Essentially, there are plenty of reasons you can attribute as to why glass is such a popular option for internal, external, residential and business fittings, which are predominantly its rigidness, strength, ability not to bend, buckle or break upon reasonable pressure, and its durability.

If you are looking to have custom glass balustrades fitted, why not give us a call here at ANY Weld and see what we can do to help you find the perfect solution?

You may have seen balconies on other properties and thought to yourself that they look impressive, so why not give yourself the same upgrade on your own home? If you needed any further convincing, here’s a few reasons why having a balcony is better…

Add value

In terms of value per extra square footage, a balcony will increase property value considerably. They give home owners a less time-consuming option to building an extension and are arguably more attractive too.

Adding a balcony means that visitors can make the most of it by spending evenings and warm days out on the balcony. And of course, there’s the opportunity to dine alfresco on the balcony.

Add space

Balconies can provide homeowners with maximum living space. Balconies give you that additional area of space for people, and whether you live in a large property or a home that is cosier, the extra space is usually more than welcome.

Enjoying outdoors

If you don't have a huge amount of garden space or live in a busy area, what better way to get outside and get some fresh air than to step out on to your brand new balcony space? In fact, the relaxing element that a balcony offers is unrivalled. Taking the time to stand on your balcony and soak in a pleasant view is nothing short of amazing!

Gardening

It really doesn't matter how big or small your balcony is, you can fit some kind of mini-allotment in the space. You can add a nice injection of colour to look at if you’d like to grow some flowers, or if you’re keen to grow your own fruit and veg, you have easy access to your balcony for green-fingery!

Pets

If you have a pet, and you spend a lot of time out of the house during the day, having a secure space like a balcony is a great way to let them get outside and have some fresh air/go to the toilet. As you will know, having a pet locked inside all day is definitely not recommended, so why not let them enjoy some of the outdoors while you’re out?

Here at ANY Weld, we can provide you with a range of bespoke glass balconies , so why not get in touch with us today and find out how we can help you?

Whether you have a new property and you are looking to add something special, or you have another project that would benefit from a fine new addition, glass balustrades will always give you that touch of class required. Not only do balustrades look fantastic, but they provide a whole host of practical benefits too. This tremendously attractive and exceedingly versatile material lends itself perfectly to home décor, so if you’re contemplating having a bespoke glass balustrade fitted, here are six reasons why you should.

The visual appeal

Your home is not just defined by what is inside, but on the outside too. First impressions are everything, as they say, and having a custom glass balustrade installed is sure to offer your home a pleasant, functional addition that will complement the rest of your property.

The beauty of glass is that it is visually appealing. It provides homeowners with a safe and secure option, not to mention allowing light to pass through, giving a space the feel or airy openness. Pair your glass balustrades with metal and/or wood, and you’re sure to have a refined, high-class look to your home.

Feel safe

There’s a whole host of alternative barriers you can opt for as a means of securing your home, such as wooden fences, but little offers as much as a glass balustrade. If you are looking for a sleek, light, and clean feature, then glass is the way forward.

Consider this: Do you want a safety barrier that can stand up to pressure and impact? If the answer is yes, then toughened, tempered glass is arguably the best option for you as part of your balustrade installation.

The glass used is toughened and is done so to the extent that it is able to withstand most impacts. Furthermore, with the glass being tempered, it gives you added strength that regular glass doesn't have. Ordinary glass shatters into thousands of little, sharp fragments, whereas glass used for balustrades will merely crack or chip in extreme circumstances.

Add extra security

You may view stone or glass as the more reassuring option for security around a balcony, or other outside areas of your home, glass balustrades are equally as effective at providing a solid barrier, with the added benefit of being able to see through them on to lower parts of the garden, for example.

They can act as an efficient deterrent for anyone having not so pleasant intentions, for example, too.

Fantastic value

It goes without saying, that any improvement you make to your property is going to add extra value to it, should you want to sell up and move on in the future.

Adding a bespoke glass balustrade will definitely add value and appeal, and with the fact that high-quality fixtures and fittings that look great will only make the house more alluring for potential buyers. It could be the difference between a sale and not, if you do ever decide to part with your home.

A level of consistency

You may well have seen some additions and alterations to other properties that made you wonder what they were thinking about when they chose it. You can avoid this when you find a custom glass balustrade to fit your needs. Why not contact us here at ANY Weld today and look forward to our fully qualified expert team delivering a special new addition to you?

Are you looking to rejuvenate your home and give it the upgrade it deserves? There’s a whole host of benefits that glass balustrades bring to the fore that you may not have even considered before. So why not let us show you eight reasons why you should choose frameless glass balustrades in your home?

Safety

Safety is obviously one of the main considerations when you make any changes to your home, and a balustrade is no different. You can opt for safety or tempered glass; these options will give you the added peace of mind that you and your family will remain safe at all times. To achieve a hardened toughness with tempered glass, the glass is first heated up and then cooling. Safety glass is often regarded to be as solid as steel, making it far more difficult to damage, and what’s more, safety glass doesn’t shatter in the way that normal glass does would, reducing the risk of harm and making it the ideal choice for those with children.

Environmentally-friendly

Another wonderful reason to choose a glass balustrade is the positive environmental impact it will offer your home. Glass is an environmentally-friendly material due to being easily recyclable and doesn’t release any potentially harmful chemicals that some metals often do.

Perfect for personalisation

One of the most appealing factors of glass balustrades is that they can be created exclusively for you and exactly to the specifications you require. For instance, you can have textured, frosted or curved glass, depending on your preferences. You can also add a splash of colour that can be paired with your interior décor, which still also allows you to enjoy the transparency glass provides.

The views

Look forward to unrestricted views that will open your home up, giving the impression of additional space. Additionally, glass balustrades permit light to freely flow around, adding that more welcoming and open feel. If you are lucky enough to have a view that will make your friends envious, then what better way to further enjoy it than to choose glass balustrades?

Adding style

If you have seen other modern builds that incorporate glass, then you will be able to appreciate how glass balustrades provide your home with a wonderful air of style, class and sophistication. The feel of up to date modernisation is also extremely appealing for many customers of ours. Furthermore, you could well be adding more value to your property, should you decide to sell.

Care free maintenance

As we’re sure you’ll already know, glass is very easy to maintain. Cleaning only need to be done every once in a while, compared to other alternative materials, and if marks of scratches appear, you can use a polish restore it to its original splendour.

Sound investment

Glass is not only quality in terms of build, look and feel, it is also, arguably a better investment when compared to other materials, such as wood, which are regularly used to make stair railings. This is because when you choose glass, you’re guaranteed they aren’t going to corrode or rot over time. As such, glass balustrades make for a fine investment for your home, and you can rest assured that it will stay looking just as good as the day it was fitted for a long, long time!

The modern feel

Possibly we are slightly biased, but we feel that glass is a truly stunning material that gives any home an element of add the wow factor to your home. Not only is there a simplistic style, but there is also the feel that it will stand the test of time. Call ANY Weld today if you want to have a feature for your home that will give you the wow factor.
